Last week in the U.S. the ‘Mommy Wars’ got political when Democratic Strategist Hilary Rosen incensed stay at home mothers by accusing Mitt Romney’s wife, Ann, of ‘never having worked a day in her life’, despite the fact that she has raised a family of 5 boys.
The comedian Bill Maher then added fat to the fire on his HBO chat show “Real Time” by adding that ‘Ann Romney has never gotten her ass out of the house to work’. He later slightly backtracked by elaborating that ‘there is a big difference between being a mother, and that tough job, and getting your ass out the door at 7 a.m. when it’s cold, having to deal with the boss, being in a workplace, or even if you’re unhappy you can’t show it for eight hours.’
Yes, Bill, there is a difference. The difference is that your home is your workplace, but you don’t get paid, and you don’t get a bonus and you don’t get an appraisal, and you certainly don’t get valued as making an invaluable contribution to society.
