Increase in Personal Tax Allowance hits single income families

Posted in: Viewpoints

The Coalition government’s big gift to ‘working’ families is an increase in the personal tax allowance from £7,475 to £9, 205, working out at an extra £3,460 per year for dual income families.  This allowance is of course only given to working individuals, and families that have opted to sacrifice an income in effect lose out to the tune of £1,730. In effect this penalises those families that have made the choice to step off the career ladder, and make raising their children their priority.

The only way of making this fair and supportive to ALL families, which are indeed the building blocks upon which a stable society is based, is to implement transferable tax allowances, giving the mother at home the share she deserves for her crucial role.
